Climax
Here we are…The Climax. Twenty-five days in and you’re ready take the insights you learned in the last chapter and bring it to a moment of truth. If you went deep enough into your own emotions and motivations then this moment of truth should also lead to a moment that defines your life.
First, let’s continue with the story analogies: Dorothy and her companions return to the Emerald City with the Witch’s broom. They are ready to confront that which holds power over them - The Wizard. Once there it is revealed who the Wizard really is! A man possessed by ego to the point that he must cast illusions to maintain his power. He knows the secrets, yes, to what Dorothy and her companions seek, but he is powerless in giving them some external magic for giving out brains, hearts, courage, and homes. He can only reveal what was already inside the characters. There was never a physical brain (a symbol) needed for the Scarecrow, for example, but a symbolic “brain” given in the form of a diploma. The Quest proved to each character that they always had what they sought all along.
In Star Wars, Luke was the last remaining pilot in his squadron which set out to destroy the Death Star. Not only did he end up facing this menace alone, again the Death Star being symbolic of confronting that which had ultimate power over destiny enough to destroy a planet in a split second, but he also had the Dark Lord Vader on his tail. During the Transcending phase Luke merged with Obi-Wan’s knowledge which is why he could hear Obi-Wan’s voice instructing him to “use the Force”. Luke did just that and was able, with eyes closed, to make the crack shot to liberate his comrades.
Interesting enough, Campbell describes these climatic moments as “Atonement with the Father” (“Atonement” breaking down into “At-One-Ment” where the ego no longer exists and becomes One with Source.) He further describes this point in the story-myth (which also applies to your life story) as the moment in which all events have been leading up to and from which all future points will lead away from. Strange how Darth Vader was revealed later to be Luke’s actual, biological father. Dorothy also had to confront a symbolic "Father-figure" in the Wizard.
This is the moment where you transcend the ego. The last phase gave you information and the reason to have courage, but to emotionally transcend from Conscious Competence to Unconscious Competence you must commit to bringing something new into your life - the attainment of your Quest!
This is the moment where the outer world begins to reflect the inner world that you’ve been perfecting for the past 25 days. By now you should realize that the attainment of your Quest, in some form or another, is natural. Even if the external result is not completely what you had expected, the internal process has brought to you a sense of perfection. When it is accepted that there is no separation -- between you and Source, you and your brother, you and your achievements -- then finding the boon of your Quests become an everyday occurrence.
Here is where you begin to understand the mastery phase, which will be covered in the next chapter, Destiny. Here is where you go from “Believing” to “Receiving”, “Consciously Competent” to “Unconsciously Competent” and, finally, from partaking in Emotional practices into enjoying Physical boons.
