Transcendence
Congratulations! If you made it this far then you’re now entering the phase of the Quest where you’ll start seeing results. I said before in this book that it takes 21 days to effectively form a new habit. If you made it here then you're well on your way to making fitness a way of life. You're also beginning to make Conscious Competence a habit as well.
There are three parts to this last leg of the journey: Transcendence, where you find the correct answers within that will help you to function effectively; Climax, where you physically use this information to bring about a desired result; and finally Destiny, where you consciously acknowledge the steps it took to get here so you can effectively repeat and master it.
Conceivably, this chapter could’ve been called many things: Rebirth, Ascension, Resurrection, Apotheosis, or even Regeneration. After your senses have been heightened during the “Dark Night” chapter, your awareness now is open to receiving new information previously inaccessible in order to finish the Quest. Here is where you leave the emotional waters of Conscious Incompetence and step forward onto the land of reality, what I call Conscious Competence.
Transcendence is a unique phenomenon. You will find out that truly the answers are within because some form of knowledge has been transferred to you after crossing the last three emotional challenges of Deserts, Twists, and Nights. In Star Wars, Luke sees his mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi sacrifice his own life to teach Luke a deeper lesson - that salvation comes from within. After Luke witnesses this event, Obi-Wan’s voice becomes internal. He hears the voice inside that gives Luke the information needed to accomplish the goal of destroying the Death Star. Dorothy almost loses her beloved friend, the Scarecrow. By attempting to save his life she throws water on his burning arm. What happens, in addition to saving Scarecrow’s life, is that the water douses the Witch, melting her away in a steamy puddle. I believe this moment from the Wizard of Oz is symbolic of this “Transcendence” in that the Wicked Witch was symbolic of the ego dissolving away when splashed with the Truth.
In the next three days, you will experience your own Transcendence by learning how to ask yourself effective questions. You are now being asked to be your own mentor, to be the one with all the answers. And the answers Are There! When you ask the right questions of yourself you will be able to solicit deep seeded knowledge from within.
Between each set you will go deeper with each of your intentions by asking yourself questions that have one or more of the following qualities:
1. Questions that are intended to lead you to the fulfillment of your Quest as well as the intentions you had set forth for yourself.
2. Questions that are honest and will make you stop to sincerely search for the answer.
3. The Questions encourage you to grow.
4. The Questions inspire immediate action and forward momentum.
5. The Questions are stated in your own language and make sense to you.
6. Questions that separate “truth” from your subjective interpretations or judgments. With every interpretation you should be able to identify "your truth", "someone else's truth" and "objective" truth.
7. The Question has a purpose.
8. Questions that close the critical gap.
Each question will require you to give a heartfelt answer. Once you do this, your answer will allow you to “spin” a new question.
So how do you “spin” a question? Well, here’s an example:
Question 1: “Why is the sky blue?”
Answer 1: “Because Santa put his elves on payroll during the off season to keep painting the sky blue when no one’s looking.”
Question #2 will be a "spin-off" of the answer and should have something to do with either “Santa”, “elves”, “painting the sky blue”, “the off season”, or “payrolls”, etc.
Question #2: “Who put Santa in charge of having the sky painted blue? Shouldn’t his Christmas duties be enough for one man?”
Answer #2: “Santa wanted to be in charge because in olden days the sky was always a dark gray. Being the benevolent man Santa was, he wanted to make it bright blue to inspire peace and tranquility. So he got a special permit from God to become the official administrator of ‘Sky Duties’ since he spends a lot of time flying anyway.”
And so on…
Go as deep with the questions as you wish to go or as you feel would be productive. If you found the answer that inspires action and the clearest answer for you, it’s okay to stop.
IMPORTANT: Once you're finished spinning your questions, go back to your ORIGINAL QUESTION and see if you've adequately answered it. Does it inspire you to action? Does it help you get centered on your truth? Does it help you close a critical gap? Be sure to gain a sense of which questions will be useful, not just insightful. Asking the right questions is definitely a fine art to master at these phase of the Quest. The better your questions, the more effective you'll be in your Climax.
The intention of this phase is to give you CLARITY. After the next FOUR days of doing this you should have a clear course of action to lead you into PHASE 8: CLIMAX. In fact, your line of questioning should lead you to ONE task per INTENTION to be completed by DAYS 28-30. In my journal I usually make it a habit to go “7 Questions Deep" with each of my intentions. The number 7 represents this phase of the quest and is considered the "Christ consciousness" number. (Which I don’t think is coincidence!)
